• What is Breast Augmentation?

  Augmentation mammoplasty is performed to increase the size of small or underdeveloped breasts. Mammoplasty may also bring back and enlarge breast volume if it has diminished as a result of pregnancy and breast-feeding. Breast implants can serve for a number of purposes; breast cancer patients may undergo breast augmentation surgery for reconstructive purposes after mastectomy or women with asymmetrical breasts may have a single breast implant to balance the differences in size. • Treatment Options

  The size and the type of breast implants will be determined by the patient’s aims for breast enlargement, body shape and weight, breast tissue, and appearance preferences. All breast implants contain a lumen that is a solid silicone rubber outer shell. Breast implant alternatives are:

  • Saline breast implants: Filled with sterile salty water, saline implants can be filled to fit a prearranged size. Saline can also be filled during surgery to avoid major modifications in implant size.
  • Silicone filled breast implants: Filled with soft, elastic gel, silicone breast implants are pre-filled and may need a longer cut to be placed.

• How it is Performed

  Breast augmentation surgery takes about 2 hours. The appropriate size, the area of incisions and the placement of implants whether it would be on top of or underneath the chest muscle will be jointly decided by the patient and the Longevita partner plastic surgeon. General anaesthesia or intravenous sedation is applied before the surgery. Longevita partner aesthetic surgeon advises on the suitable type of anaesthesia for each patient. Cuts are made in unremarkable sites in order to minimize visible scarring. Patients have three options for incision sites. Inframammary incision is made under the breast border. Trans axillary incision is made under the armpit. Per areolar incision is made around the nipple area. The type of incision used actually depends on the type of implant, degree of augmentation desired, patient’s anatomy and preferences. Before the surgery, patient and the doctor decides on the make of breast implants either silicone or saline. Breast implants can be inserted either under the pectoral muscle (a sub muscular placement) or directly behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle (a sub mammary / sub glandular placement). Where to place implants depends on the type of the implants, desired breast size and the patient’s anatomy. Layered sutures are used to close incisions. Skin adhesive or surgical tape may also be used. Incision lines will disappear over time.

• Results

  Results of the breast enlargement surgery can be seen immediately. Post-surgical inflammation and incision lines will disappear gradually. The patients may be satisfied with their new image as they recover and realize the completion of their aim for full breasts. After the breast enlargement procedure, the patient may need to put on surgical dressing that may include support bra or garments. Patients will be given detailed instructions about post-surgical care by Longevita partner plastic surgeons. Patients will be able to walk with own strength right after the breast augmentation surgery. In the first couple of days after the breast enlargement surgery, patients may feel stiff and sore in the chest region. It is recommended to wear a support bra. Breasts may be sensitive to touch and skin may feel warm or itchy. It is usual to have a difficulty raising the arms. • Limitations

  There are no limitations for breast augmentation surgery. Even though breast implants are long lasting, over time breast implants may need to be replaced due to aging, weight fluctuation and hormonal factors.  

• Risks

  The risks of breast implants are:

  • Unfavourable scarring
  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Infection
  • Poor healing of incisions
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation, may be temporary or permanent
  • Capsular contracture, which is the formation of firm scar tissue around the implant
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications

  Even though there may be risks with breast implants, they do not affect breast health.  There are no proven links found in literature between breast implants and autoimmune or other systemic diseases.

• Contraindications

  Patients must inform their Longevita partner plastic surgeon if they have any medical conditions such as hypertension, vascular problems, heart failure, diabetes, lung problems, bleeding problems, epilepsy, neurological problems, and allergies to certain drugs. The procedure may not be performed if one has any kind of these problems.
