Your eyes truly are the window to your soul. The way your eyes dance to the motion of events around you can reveal your innermost, secret emotions. It is the Duchenne smile, which involves your eyes, that indicates true happiness.
It only takes a mere crinkle around the eyes in the form of a “crow’s feet”. However, if you are struggling with signs of ageing, a crow’s feet is rather stressful. It can make you feel unhappy about your physical appearance. The centrality of eyes in creating beautiful aesthetics is what prompts many to go for almond eye surgery.
What Is Almond Eye Surgery?
Almond eye surgery is a type of blepharoplasty in which the position of the lower eyelid is changed so that it meets the border of the iris, which gives the eye an almond shape. Some people have naturally larger and wider eyes, and their lower eyelids may tilt downward. It could simply be an inherited trait.
However, the lids may also droop or sag due to different reasons. It could be present due to an underlying health condition, skin problem, or a post-eye-surgery complication (lower eyelid retraction). The treatment depends on the cause of the problem, but if it’s for cosmetic reasons, an almond eye surgery can help fix the issue.
Almond eyes are usually considered quite attractive. Many people are born with this eye shape due to their genetics. Almond eyes are also more commonly found in certain ethnicities. However, those who don’t have this eye shape can achieve it through cosmetic surgery.
Who Is A Good Candidate For Almond Eye Surgery?
If your lower eyelids are tilted downwards, it can make your eyes look tired, sad, stressed, and aged. You might not even be experiencing these emotions, but it’s just your eyes being deceptive. No wonder we can question the veracity of eyes being the window to our soul.
Standards of beauty have enormous variations. However, almond-shaped eyes are quite desirable as they give a beautiful definition to the facial structure. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Rihanna, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis and many others are famous for their gorgeous almond eyes. It gives them a more youthful appearance. An upward slant, with the lower and upper eyelids touching the edges of the iris, characterises this shape.
The excess skin and fat around the eyes that come with ageing can also hide the true shape of your eyes. It can even give them an uneven appearance making one eye look slightly larger than the other. Keep in mind that if there’s a significant drooping of the lower eyelids, then the surgeon may recommend you to undergo some additional procedures.
How To Prepare for Almond Eye Surgery?
For every large endeavour, we must come prepared. The same goes for your almond eye surgery in Turkey. If you’ve already booked the procedure with us, here are a few things that you should keep in mind prior to your procedure.
-
Are You Taking Any Medications?
If you’re suffering from any ailment and are taking medication for it, you need to inform us about that. You also have to tell us about your routine medications. This will determine your suitability for the surgery. Our medical team will also do necessary blood tests on your arrival to Turkey. This way, we can ensure a smooth procedure.
Certain medications such as aspirin, Aleve, or ibuprofen should not be taken. That’s because they have an impact on your blood circulation. Carefully review the list of drugs containing aspirin and ibuprofen.
-
What Are You Eating and Drinking?
Make sure to not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the night before your surgery. An almond eye surgery requires general anaesthesia, so you’ll be unconscious. With no control over the body’s reflexes, there’s a risk of vomiting and damaging your lungs. Therefore, your stomach should not have any food or drink in it.
Moreover, you should stop smoking two weeks before the surgery and avoid consuming alcohol. That’s because it can affect your wound healing.
-
What Should You Wear?
Most importantly, sunscreen. You have to avoid sun damage two weeks before the surgery. We recommend you wear an SPF 30 or higher for adequate protection.
You also have to keep your clothes in mind. When coming to the clinic for surgery, it’s better to wear a zip-up or button-up shirt and slip-on shoes. Your clothes should be loose-fitting. They’ll make it easier for you to change before and after the surgery. It’s important that no harm comes to the surgical areas.
-
Can You Do Make-up Before Almond Eye Surgery in Turkey?
Absolutely not. Do not wear make-up and nail polish on the day your procedure is scheduled. Additionally, do not wear any jewellery or contact lenses, and remove any piercings as well.
What Is The Procedure for Almond Eye Surgery?
Although traditional eyelid surgery aims to remove excess skin and fat from around the eyes, that’s not the treatment goal of almond eye surgery. Once you arrive at the hospital, the surgeon will begin by administering local or general anaesthesia so that you do not feel any pain during the surgery.
Once it takes effect, the procedure begins. The incisions for this procedure are made outside the lower eyelids. Through them, inside the eye, around the upper cheekbones, retractor bands are released.
This allows the lower eyelid to move upward. And to make sure that the retractor bands do not get reattached, a spacer graft is placed inside the lower eyelid. This also gives more vertical length to the eye, which is then lifted (lateral canthus tilted upwards) and sutured. The surgery can be done safely as long as your surgeon is licensed and board-certified.
What Are The Side Effects of Amond Eye Surgery?
You may temporarily experience the following side effects after undergoing almond eye surgery:
- Pain
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Mild bleeding
- Nausea
- Inflammation
Your surgeon may prescribe antibiotics and painkillers so that you can better manage these post-op side effects. They usually last for less than 2 weeks and should start to get better with time. If you feel like you’re not recovering normally, you should make sure to reach out to your surgeon immediately.
What To Expect After Almond Eye Surgery?
You’ll be staying in the hospital for one night after the surgery. Afterwards, you can return to your hotel. You can take a shower but be very gentle. Of course, you shouldn’t scrub the area around your eyes.
The day you leave the hospital, you may start applying ice to the surgical area. It is important that you limit your activity soon after the surgery. In the first week of your surgery, you can take frequent short walks. Make sure that someone accompanies you during these. You’ll need to stay away from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise in the first month after the surgery. If you’re not feeling nauseous, you can resume your regular diet. Also, you can start wearing your make-up after a week has passed.
On the 5th or 7th day, there will be a check-up appointment with the surgeon. Your dedicated patient relations specialist will also accompany you. There, your surgeon will check your surgical areas and inform you about the aftercare process in detail. Your patient relations specialist will also go through the post-operative instructions. She will be one call away whenever you have a question to ask.
During this process, it is normal to have swelling. Do not panic. Your aftercare specialist will always be there to help you with your concerns. While swelling should be completely gone after six months, your healing will continue for the entire first year. We will follow you through the entire process. You can contact your Aftercare Specialist whenever you find the need.
How Are The Results of Almond Eye Surgery?
Almond eye surgery can noticeably change the shape of your eyes. Although the outer corner of the eyes may be only lifted by a few millimetres, the change can be dramatic yet natural-looking. You might not be able to see it immediately after the surgery because of the swelling and bruising. The healing of the eyes can take a few months. So, you’ll be able to see the final results after that, and they can last for a long time.
Concluding Remarks
Almond eye shape is very popular and considered quite desirable. While some people are naturally born with it, others can undergo almond eye surgery to achieve this eye shape. However, to determine if you’ll be a suitable candidate for this procedure, your plastic surgeon will first assess the anatomy of your eyes and ask for your medical history. It is possible that you might end up needing some additional surgeries.
Once you’ve had the almond eye surgery, make sure to follow the aftercare instructions of the surgeon and be very careful around the eyes so that you don’t end up damaging the results. Before deciding on this procedure, make sure to discuss a medical professional so that you can get the right treatment plan.
